| I got a call from Gary West of Michigan today. Gary is a well experienced and successful racing pigeon fancier. I had sent him four Staf Van Reet late hatch hens last year to try on his race team. One of which won 1st place by 149 yds. Gary was so impressed with these Van Reet's that even though he is a old bird widowhood cock flyer, he chose to race the three remaining hens in the 2007 old bird season. He had begun training and all had been going fairly well. His team including three of the Staf Van Reet hens were all down on eggs or small youngsters. The other night after training he left the trap open though the night. When he returned to the loft In the morning he discovered all of the youngsters were dead and the eggs were cold. His race team were huddling in the top nest boxes trying to evade the hawk that was in the loft. To Gary's surprise there were three hens holding fast on the nest. They were holding their ground, protecting the nest. They were the only three birds in the loft to do so. They were the three Staf Van Reet hens I had sent him. The more time goes by, the more fascinating reports I receive about these Staf Van Reet Pigeons. I suppose the instinct to defend the nest is another reason these pigeons are such incredible racers. The birds I sent to Gary all descend from full brothers Favorie and Big Tom. This family of racers continues to amaze me and those who try them. The racing pigeons of Staf Van Reet are for those who know the difference! Yours in the sport, Tom www.sleepyhollowloft.com |
